FACT or MYTH: My auto insurance automatically extends to cover my children when they turn 16.

March 2017

MYTH! Carriers differ on when a driver needs to be added but the need for their addition is standard. Many companies require a new driver to be added to your policy when they turn 16, while others demand their coverage only when the driver obtains his or her unrestricted license. We recommend that you contact your agent when your child turns 16 to discover what your carrier and policy requires  to ensure adequate coverage is extended to your new driver.

When calling your agent, be prepared with the following regarding your new driver:

  • Full name
  • Date of birth
  • Social security number
  • Driver’s license number

Additionally, many carriers require that new drivers complete a Young Driver Questionnaire. This can also be obtained through your agent.

If your child maintains a B-average or higher GPA in school, he or she could be eligible for a good student discount. This discount is applied to your monthly or annual premiums. To qualify, you will be asked to submit a copy of your student’s recent report card or other scholastic performance documentation.
