Servant-based Leadership
Lessons Learned in Times of Turmoil
Once again, meeting in person for our NEXT STEPS Leadership Workshop was not feasible, so we have continued to host the event by doing the next best thing. With huge support from our friends at Journey Church, the NEXT STEPS Leadership Workshop Online took place LIVE on Facebook on June 17. Our topic for this online event was “Servant-based Leadership: Lessons Learned in Times of Turmoil,” and it could not have been more timely.
Not only has the COVID pandemic presented a huge disruption for business and organizational leaders, but now we face extreme tensions nationwide in terms of racial inequality. How do we lead in times of turmoil? It’s a tough question. Peel & Holland President Roy Riley and Journey Church Lead Pastor Matt Johnson led a discussion with guest panelists Demoree Fields and Kevin Saal. These four local leaders dug deep into what servant-based leadership should look like, especially in times like these.

A Powerful and Candid Conversation
Think about what motivates you as a leader. Do you lead for the right reasons? Are you focused on empowering others? Now more than ever, leaders face challenges of supporting their teams with compassion and putting them first. This online workshop brings you local panelists who share their take on what servant-based leadership is all about. You’ll hear some practical tips for improving relationships and serving others in a season of crisis.
Here are just a few sound bites from this inspiring workshop discussion:
“Lead by example – to me, that’s the starting point of servant-based leadership. If you don’t have that, no one’s adoption of any of the other principles matters.” – Matt Johnson
“I can talk all I want to. But, if I’m out there doing something different, everybody’s going to pick up on it.” – Demoree Fields
“The last three months – no one was equipped to manage things effectively at a high level. It’s like we were putting the plane together while we were flying it. A lot of patience and a lot of communication has been key.” – Kevin Saal
“As leaders, if you don’t communicate clearly and you don’t show up, others can’t read our minds or read our hearts. While there isn’t certainty, there can be clarity. That’s what people need the most.” – Matt Johnson
“A leader does small efforts of selfless service and sacrifice every single day to ultimately build up the credibility for critical times, like COVID-19, where your team knows what’s on your heart. They know you.” – Kevin Saal
“I think my role is to educate people who are unlike me – help them understand. People around me instilled in me not to just sit back and watch, but to have conversations with other leaders around the community.” – Demoree Field
“My point of view, my world is not ‘the world.’ It takes humility to acknowledge that. There is a mutual respect in listening.” – Matt Johnson
“It takes effort when you’re changing hearts. That’s the hard work.” – Kevin Saal
